Benjamin was relaxing in his living room when a call came in, he picked after the second ring “Good Evening, Am I speaking to Mr Benjamin Effiong” said a man with a husky voice. “Yes I am, how can I help you” Benjamin said with curiosity “Congratulation, Mr Benjamin Effiong, your wife chidinma has just put to bed, she delivered of a baby boy” the man spoke with obvious excitement Benjamin paused for some seconds on the phone; he didn’t know what to make of the news, weather he should be happy that he had a son or he should be sad he had a son with a woman with an awful attitude.
He managed to say “Thanks so much, am glad”. The call died. Benjamin who ought to be rejoicing was downcast. He knew he was in big trouble; chidinma was certainly coming home soon and that was the last thing he wanted to happen at this crucial moment of his life. He knelt down on his knees and said a little prayer. He couldn’t afford to lose Helen. “I have to act fast “he thought to himself.
After two weeks Chidinma came back home, she had really missed home. She was glad to be back home. She checked everywhere in the house and there wasn’t any change. The previous day Benjamin having been notified about her coming had put back the pictures in their proper place.
There was no change in the house at all, No addition nor subtraction. Benjamin arrived late that night, she had been really expectant, immediately she heard the sound of his car enter the compound she went outside to welcome him. She ran to him and snuggled him like a kid.
He managed to feign a bright countenance. “Wow, how are you; how is the baby; how was the journey?” the three question came rushing out of his mouth. “The baby and I are fine, he is already asleep; how are you ben, I really missed you” she said with great excitement. Benjamin rolled his eyes “you missed me?” “Yes, I do” Chidinma responded and they both entered the house.
Chidinma had started noticing some changes in Benjamin, he hardly stayed at home, his attitude towards her was always cold and his mind was always wandering. She knew something was fishy; so she had decided to confront him. “Ben!! I don’t understand you any longer, You hardlly give me attention since I came back from the states, you haven’t even touched me, I am just like a piece of furniture in this house, what’s happening, is there anything I need to know.”
She spoke furiously, “Am so sorry baby, I have been so busy at work, we had some new clients so I had to make sure all goes well” Benjamin replied with an apologetic face. “I just hope you aren’t seeing anyone outside, because…” she insinuated “I promise I would give you attention, am sorry, you should trust your husband “Benjamin replied.
“What about the issue of the house help we discussed the other time.” “Oh yes, I have told a friend to help me find one, he would get back to me as soon as he finds one.” Benjamin lied.
Helen’s mind was constantly troubled, she hadn’t slept well since she broke up with afolabi, and she couldn’t believe she was the one who broke up with him. She needed some distraction so she went to get a nollyhood movie, she was captivated by the movie.
At the end of the movie, it dawned on her the movie was exactly the same thing that was happening in her life. It was as though the movie was produced because of her. Just like what was happening in her life the main character in the movie had to make a choice between two men.
In fact the story was so intriguing that when the main character opted for a certain man in the movie; she had rained abuses on her; “this girl isn’t wise at all, how can someone be so foolish” she said to herself nodding her head. The movie really got her thinking, what if she had made the wrong choice, she was pensive.
“I don’t even know his family and friends, how can I be so foolish” she said furiously. She felt like talking to Benjamin immediately, asking him to introduced her to his friends and family. But she suppressed the urge. She decided she would pay him a surprise visit on his birthday, which was just two days away.
It was a Saturday morning, 8am when Benjamin phone began to ring, he was still feeling sleepy, he had worked late the previous day but when he saw it was Helen calling; he shook off urge to sleep and picked up the phone. “Happy Birthday sweetheart, I wish you all the best in life.”
Helen said happily.” thanks so much dear “Benjamin whispered gracefully. “Are you going to be home today?” Helen asked. “Yes I am going to be home, why do you ask?” he replied with fear, not wanting Helen to come over because of his wife.” nothing dear” Helen responded. Later on that day, she headed for Benjamin’s home with a parcel consisting of a white shirt and a tie.
Helen would never forget in a hurry the surprise that met her that day, it was the greatest embarrassment of her entire life. Benjamin had just left 30minutes earlier to meet his friends before Helen came in; “sweetheart, sweetheart, where are you?” she called out excitedly.
The figure of an outraged woman with a baby came out of the blue. Her face was red, obviously she was very furious. Helen on seeing her began to shake profusely. “Good afternoon ma,” Helen managed to say with a cracking voice. “Keep your good afternoon to yourself, were you not the one just calling my husband sweetheart” chidinma said with so much indignation. Helen’s gift immediately fell down on hearing husband “Husband!” helen echoed the word, she was confused, just like a kid lost in the forest.
“Yes! My husband, so you are the one seeing my husband, no wonder he does not give me attention since I got back from the states, you husband snatcher!!” chidinma shouted on top of her voice. Helen at that point just wanted the ground to swallow her. She was so embarrassed; she couldn’t even look at chidinma’s face much less into her eyes.
She just wanted to be home, tears had started to flow from her eyes. She wished she had wings; she would just fly home, the only valid option was to run; she ran out like she was been chased by a dog.
